Today on the way home from the latest OB's appointment, I heard a short interview on NPR, Fresh Air, on whether hospitals should have art. Grayson Perry, my favorite transvestite potter (sorry, Leopold, but you haven't been wearing your caftans for a few years now) came on the air to argue against hospital art, saying if there were to be art in hospitals, he would prefer a lovely Francis Bacon to a banal boat scene or "nice" watercolor. His words were that art should remind us of what makes us human.
I think I have to agree, though I'm not sure I want a Francis Bacon's screaming pope with side of beef in the delivery room, that I would rather have a Klimt to look at than a pretty cottage lit from within in the dusky twilight (you know who I mean).
Pregnancy
I went into the OB's a bit apprehensive today, I have been having cramping sensations, and was SURE that I would be delivering any minute. The doctor said I am beginning to efface, but that delivery most likely will still be a quite few days off (no need to panic, Mom). She also estimates the baby's weight to be about 6 1/2 pounds, though she reminds me that this is an inexact science. Otherwise all my and the baby's vital signs remain good, even if I feel painful and loose.

I heard the same interview on NPR. I was laughing my butt off at that guy! I love real art as much as the next art history person, but I don't want a freakin Bacon near me when I am at the hospital. =)
