I don't remember exactly how old I was when my mother met Marc, but at the time he owned and ran a little French restaurant at Pico and Robertson in West Los Angeles, with the best mousse au chocolat and filet of sole ever. My mom was divorced with a little girl to look after (me, of course), but Marc wasn't concerned with that. Marc was 19 years older than my mom, but she didn't mind. They were in love. My own father moved overseas when I was ten, and Marc was sort of my helpful uncle, driving me to the library and doctors appointments in his convertible beetle. We didn't always see eye to eye, but he was there.
In 1987, when I moved away from home, Marc moved in with Mom. And in 1988, (on 8-8-88)Mom and Marc got married in the smallest ceremony I have ever seen. I was the maid of honor, Marc's younger son little Marc was the best man.
It's been twenty years and Mom and Marc are as happy a couple as I could hope to see. They adore each other. They enjoy a mellow life, spending time with friends and family. They have a combined family of 4 children (truck driver, entrepreneur, artist, and assistant d.a.) and seven grandchildren. Marc treats my mother with old-fashioned respect and very real affection, which is what I most value.
